Jos Crisis: 665 Corps Members Redeployed from Plateau
The prevailing poor security situation in Jos, Plateau State, has compelled the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) authorities to allow the redeployment of some 665 corps members posted to the state.

And for the courage and patriotism they displayed by remaining behind, the other 351 corps members have been awarded N5 million by the state Governor Jonah Jang.

Jang, who disclosed the reward while addressing the NYSC members during their passing out parade, said: “Your belief in our state and the desire to stand by us at this trying time will remain indelible in our hearts.”
He said that the state government would make an effort to create an enabling environment for the youth corps members to offer their services to the nation.

This commitment will be carried out relentlessly, he added.
According to Jang, “I wish to restate that Plateau State is the home of peace and tourism and no efforts will be spared to ensure that peace, love and hospitality for which we are known continue to prevail in the state.”

He, however, charged them to shun criminal tendencies and other societal vices.

In his remarks, the NYSC State Coordinator, Mr. Tunde Baba-Ahmed, said out of 1,016 corps members that turned up at the orientation camp in the state, only 351 agreed to stay behind.
He said the rest had redeployed to other states.

Baba-Ahmed also received directives from the national headquarters asking him to allow them to redeploy if they wanted.
The state had been embroiled in ethnic crisis which had claimed more than 500 lives. The clashes were between the Berom and the Fulanis.

In January, this year, an argument between a Fulani and a Berom in Jos, the state capital, over the re-building of a house led to one of the crisis. It was alleged then that many Fulanis were killed.
Early this month, the Fulanis, in a reprisal, were alleged to have attacked some Berom villages – Dogo-Na-Hawa, Biye and Batem - where over 500 people were reportedly massacred.
