Bomb explosion injures three in Jos
Jos — Three people have been hospitalised following an explosion in their room in Dadin Kowa  area of Jos, yesterday, sending the city into fresh panic.

One of them, 18-year-old Abdulsalami Mohammed, had his two hands chopped off by the explosion while his roommates had minor injuries.

The explosion, suspected to be from a grenade occurred at about 8a.m. when neighbours said they heard a loud bang which shook the building and attracted security men to the scene.

The circumstances leading to the explosion could not, at first, be ascertained as different stories were told by those spoken to. While a neighbour said the young men might have been trying to make a bomb, another said they might have picked an explosive unknowingly which went off when they were trying to toy with it.

Victim’s story
Abdulsalami corroborated the latter story when journalists spoke to him at the Plateau Specialist Hospital where he is receiving treatment. According to him, he picked up what looked like a fire extinguisher from under the bed, but it exploded as he was trying to fiddle with the pin.

Apart from chopping off his hands, part of this face and chest were also injured by the explosion.

A community leader in Dadin Kowa, Mallam Salisu Abubakar, told journalists who visited the area that he went to the scene with military men on hearing the explosion where they found the three suspects who were taken to hospital by the soldiers.

Meanwhile, he identified the other two suspects as Abubakar Shuaibu and Musa Hassan, adding that Abdulsalami, whose hands were chopped off formerly worked at a  quarry in the area before securing a job as a driver with another company recently.

Doctor’s prescription
Chief Surgeon of the hospital, Dr. Philemon Golwa Philemon, confirmed that the suspect was taken to the hospital by soldiers at about 8.30a.m. and had undergone the first round of surgery to stabilise him.

Dr. Philemon also added that the second round of surgery would involve re-fashioning of the stump and upper limbs to hasten the healing process.
