        Aspirant killed hours after declaration
Oghogho Omorogbe, was on Saturday killed by yet-to-be-identified gunmen in Benin, the state capital, hours after his official declaration to vie for a House of Representatives seat to represent Orhionmwon/Uhunmwode Federal Constituency.

Omorogbe, 34, son of a cleric, was fell by the assailants' bullets around Upper Ugbo, Government Reservation Area in Benin City at about 10pm shortly after he held a rally in Uhunmwode area of the city.

According to the late politician's mother-in-law, Madam Stella Amadasun, who witnessed the gory incident, the deceased returned home earlier in company of a younger man and requested that food be prepared in wait while he and his friend went for prayers.

The woman, who was on hand to assist in caring for the one month old baby boy of Omorogbe, said the incident occured just as her son-in-law returned to have the already prepared meal.

She said, "He first came with a boy to instruct his wife to make food and later went out with the boy for prayers. On his return, we already heard him opening the gates and suddenly we heard him shout 'Jesus'.

"We rushed out, by then he had not been shot; he pleaded and the wife pleaded saying, 'she is my husband.' They did not listen to us as they shot him twice.

She said that she saw five people commit the act but was not sure whether there were others outside of the compound.

Speaking further at the family's 60B, Awo Street, 2nd East Circular Street Road, where the deceased's wife sat and sorrounded by sympathisers and family members, Mrs. Amadasun continued, "The child is not even one month yet. It was around 10pm and I didn't see the faces. They were about five in number but maybe others were outside I can't say.

Confirming the incident, the Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, Peter Ogboi told our correspondent that the case was already being handled at the highest level.
